Information About Brewing Absinthe

August 21, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

If you live in a country where it is hard to find real wormwood Absinthe, or you just fancy having a go at making your very own Absinthe, you will want to know how to brew Absinthe at home.

Absinthe of Henri-Louis Pernod was made with the use of a wine base and herbs in addition with aniseed, hyssop, fennel, lemon balm, star anise, angelica, veronica, juniper, dittany and nutmeg. Czech company Sebor use a blend of 13 herbs, including chamomile and mint in addition to wormwood,  and a 100 year old recipe to make their Absinthe.

There are 3 main ways to make your own Absinthe drink:-

1.For distillation of Absinthe liquor one will require a recipe.
2.Use an Absinthe Kit with a blend of herbs and instructions.
3.Use an Absinthe essence

How to Brew Absinthe Using a Recipe

Distilling liquor at home is illegal in most countries unless you have a license and is quite complicated. Typical home-brew recipes include:-

– Wormwood (Grande Wormwood, Artemisia Absinthium)
– Importance of Green Anise
– Fennel
– Alcohol

The ingredients are first macerated for several hours, heated and then slowly distilled and then colored with extra herbs such as lemon balm, hyssop and petite wormwood. After going through the heating process one has to filter and dilute the solution.

A blend of herbs with alcohol is needed for other recipes. Take an example:-
– Requirement of 30g/ 1 ounce dried Wormwood
– 1 teaspoon hyssop
– 1 tablespoon angelica
– 1 pinch of fennel seeds is required
– One will need a teaspoon of lemon balm
– There is requirement of ¼ teaspoon each of caraway seeds and coriander seeds
– 1 liter of Everclear or vodka

In a bottle mix chopped dried wormwood with the alcohol and leave for 1-2 weeks in a cool dark place. Mix the sieved wormwood with the other herbs. After 3 or 4 days sieve it again. The Absinthe is now ready.

Brewing Absinthe at home in these ways is not recommended. Distilling is tricky and usually illegal and simply mixing the herbs with alcohol does not give a true Absinthe.

How To Brew Absinthe with a Herbal Blend Kit

There are many different herbal kits on sale online, for example the kits from  Green Devil. These are the things in their kits
– Unique micron filtration system is done for them.
– An Absinthe blend includes grande wormwood, hyssop, anise seed, fennel seed, calamus, melissa, star anise and coriander seed.
– There is more herbal ingredients in Absinthe flavoring and finishing blend.

Their Deluxe kit also contains two Absinthe spoons, two Absinthe glasses, a 1000ml bottle, two bottle labels, two muslin bags for infusing the herbs, a poster and a pamphlet containing information and instructions.

They claim that their finished Absinthe will contain as much as 70-90mg of thujone per liter – rather a large amount of thujone, the chemical found in wormwood which was once claimed to cause psychedelic effects. A real Absinthe is produced after distillation.

How To Brew Absinthe With an Essence

Absinthe essences are available to buy from AbsintheKit.A real Absinthe can be prepared at home by visiting AbsintheKit.com. The distilled essences are manufactured from traditional Absinthe herbs. Mix the essence with Everclear or vodka to have your own bottled Absinthe.

One can use 4 types of essence to produce varieties of Absinthe. They all contain real wormwood and are essences used by the Absinthe industry.

AbsintheKit.com also sell their essences in kits containing enough essence to make 14 bottles of Absinthe, bottle labels and a plastic measure. Visit their website to get more information about brewing Absinthe with their essences.

Appropriate Quantity Of Alcohol In Absinthe

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

There has been much controversy regarding the thujone levels in Absinthe and whether Absinthe can really make you hallucinate but what about its alcohol content – How much alcohol is in Absinthe?

All commercial alcoholic drinks are labeled to show their alcohol content so that people can choose the right one for them.

A person needs a hydrometer to measure alcohol content. A hydrometer looks partially like a fishing float with a thermometer attached. The hydrometer floats upright in the liquid. The water line will reach at level marked 1when it is put in water. When it is put in sugared water the level increases because the water becomes denser. The float moves lower with the use of hydrometer in fermenting alcohol as the sugar is eaten by the yeast. There is done two measurements of alcohol, one is taken with the sugar but before the yeast is added and then the final reading is taken after the fermentation of yeast.

This formula is used to get the volume of alcohol
Original gravity – Final gravity x 131 = Alcohol by volume, is the formula to know alcohol content.

Both the EU and the United States label the alcohol by volume content of drinks, some other countries go on proof. Proof is more or less double alcohol by volume.

Different brands of Absinthe have different alcohol contents. Look at the following statistics:-

Lucid Absinthe 62% abv (124 proof)
La Clandestine Absinthe 53% abv (106 proof)
The alcohol content is found to be 55% in Sebor
Research shows that Pere Kermanns contains 60% abv
Research shows that Pernod Absinthe contains 68% abv of alcohol
One can get 70% abv alcohol content in Mari Mayans Collectors 70
La Fee XS Absinthe Suisse 53% abv (106 proof)
One can get 68% abv alcohol content in La Fee XS Absinthe Francaise
La Fee Bohemian 70% abv (140 proof)
The alcohol content in La Fee Parisian is 68% abv (136 proof)
One can get 53% abv (106 proof) of alcohol content in Kubler 53
The alcohol content in Doubs Mystique Carte D’Or is 65% abv
It is proved that Roquette 1797 contains 75% abv of alcohol
Jade PF 1901 is available with 68% abv of alcohol volume
Jade Edouard is available with 72% abv (144 proof) alcohol content
Knowledge of Jade Verte Suisse 65% abv (130 proof)
Jade Nouvelle Orleans 68% abv (136 proof)

As you can see Absinthe can range from 53% abv to 75% abv, quite a difference. Now, let’s compare those levels to other alcoholic drinks:-

Absolut Blue Vodka 40% abv (80 proof)
Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila is available with 38% abv (76 proof)
Alcohol in beer tends to be 4 or 5% by volume.
Table Wine is available with 9-12% alcohol by volume (18-24 proof).
Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch Whisky 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).
Everclear 95% abv (190 proof)

No other alcoholic drink seems to come close to Absinthe!

The alcohol content can differ in homemade Absinthes. One person might mix an Absinthe essence from AbsintheKit.Absolut vodka contains 40% abv and the Everclear contains 95% abv alcohol.

Absinthe was banned in the 1900s because of claims that thujone, the chemical in wormwood, was like THC in the drug cannabis and that it was psychoactive and caused psychedelic effects. Although the claims that Absinthe is an hallucinogen are completely wrong but one should not forget that excess drinking of any liquor can be harmful. People in Memphis have realized this and, in 2006, Memphis was the city that drank the least alcohol in the USA – more than 6/10 Memphis citizens had not even consumed a sip of alcohol in at least a month when they were polled.

Alcohol is fine if consumed in moderation but you need to know how much alcohol is in Absinthe and other alcohol that you buy and consume.

Different Uses Of Artemisia Absinthium

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

Artemisia Absinthiumis the botanical and Latin name for the plant Common Wormwood. The name of Greek Goddess Artemis was used for naming “Artemisia”. Artemis was not only the goddess of forests, hills and hunt but also a saviour of children. Artemis was later linked to the moon. People believed that the Latin “Absinthium” occurred from the Ancient Greek for “unenjoyable” due to wormwood’s bitter taste.

The Common Wormwood plant generally grows in rocky areas and on arid ground in Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean. After spreading from people’s gardens it developed in parts of North America. Common wormwood or Artemisia Absinthium is also popular as green ginger, grande wormwood and armoise.

The silver gray leaves and tiny yellow flowers gives worwood plants a preety look. In tiny glands on the leaves Wormwood oil is produced. The other plants of Artemisia group are tarragon, sagebrush, sweet wormwood, Levant wormwood, silver king artemisia, Roman wormwood and southernwood. There is a relation between Artemisia plants and the Aster family of plants.

Wormwood has been used as a herbal medicine for different medical purpose
– The labor pains can be lowered down by it.
– One can check the poisoning from toadstools and hemlock.
– A very good antiseptic.
– To ease digestive problems and to stimulate digestion. Wormwood may be helpful in treating people who lack stomach acid.
– As a cardiac stimulant in pharmaceuticals.
– It helps in reducing fevers.
– It can help in discharging intestinal worms.
– As a tonic.

Diseases like Alzheimer and Crohn can be treated with wormwood.

Effects of Artemisia Absinthium

Wormwood is a key ingredient in the liquor Absinthe, the Green Fairy, which was banned in many countries in the early 1900s. Absinthe is named after this herb which also gives the drink its characteristic bitter taste,

Absinthe was banned because of its alleged psychedelic effects. People thought that the problems of hallucinations and madness occurred by it. Absinthe was also associated to the Bohemian culture of Parisian Montmartre with its loose morals, courtesans, artists and writers.

There is no difference between the chemical thujone in wormwood and the THC in the drug cannabis. Studies showed that Absinthe contained very small amounts of thujone and one will have to drink enough Absinthe to get the harmful effects of it!

One should drink Absinthe in moderation because it is about twice as strong as whisky and vodka.

A real Absinthe is that which contains Artemisia Absinthium. Other herbs and flavorings are used in the manufacturing of “fake” Absinthes which are not the real Absinthe. If you want the real thing you must check that they contain thujone or Common Wormwood or use essences, such as those from AbsintheKit.AbsintheKit.com can help a person in preparing his own Absinthe containing Artemisia Absinthium.

Knowledge Of Absinthe Wormwood

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

Absinthe wormwood is normally Artemisia Absinthium or Grand Wormwood which is actually a variety of wormwood which does not contain a vast amount of the chemical thujone. A few brands of Absinthe use Roman Wormwood which also contains thujone in addition to Grand Wormwood so drinks with two types of wormwood may contain more thujone. Thujone amounts can differ between brands significantly, some Absinthes only have negligible amounts of thujone, whereas others have up to 35mg/kg. Only Absinthe which has negligible amounts of thujone is legal for sale in the USA because thujone is an illegal food additive there.

Absinthe Wormwood has a controversy?

Medicines have been made using this common wormwood, Artemisia Absinthium since Ancient times. It has been utilized:-
– To decrease poisoning caused by toadstools and hemlock.
– As a tonic.
– To reduce a fever.
– As a stimulant to digestion.
– Treating with parasitic intestinal worms.
Absinthe’s bitter taste green color and name all are due to the wormwood herb. One can see the famous “louche” effect caused by the essential oils when water is added to the drink.
In the early 1900s Absinthe was banned in many countries because it contained the chemical thujone which has alleged harmful effects. Absinthe drinking was believed to be a danger on a country. After drinking the Absinthe a french man consumed lots of other alcohol and killed his family for which Absinthe was made responsible!
From being a trendy  Bohemian drink enjoyed by many writers and artists, such as Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and Oscar Wilde, it was suddenly a banned and illegal drink. Although it was illegalized in most of the European countries and also in the USA but was never banned in the UK, Spain, Portugal or the Czech Republic.

Absinthe Wormwood Revival

There was never any real evidence linking Absinthe drinking to hallucinations or insanity and it is now known that Absinthe is no worse than any other highly alcoholic drink. Absinthe contains twice the alcoholic content than other drinks so one should be careful while consuming it but Absinthe wormwood is not claimed to be harmful. The combination of the sedative effects of some of the herbs (and the alcohol content)and the stimulating effects of the Wormwood and other herbs can make a person feel a funny lucid or clear headed type of drunkenness when consuming heavy dose of Absinthe.

There has been a renewed interest, a revival, in Absinthe drinking after it’s legalization in most countries. There are many different types and brands of Absinthe available to buy and buyers can even order Absinthe essence, to make their own Absinthe, online from companies like AbsintheKit.com.

Absinthe Wormwood is still the most important ingredient in Absinthe today but thujone content is strictly regulated in the European Union (no more than 10mg/kg) and the United States where only trace amounts are allowed. Absinthe containing real wormwood and herbs is important for a person.

Different metal are used to make different shapes and size of Absinthe spoons. 375 different types of Absinthe spoon are there as per Marie-Claude Delahaye conclusion.
The French Pelle is the most common type of spoon shaped like a trowel which includes the pretty “les feuilles d’Absinthe”. In 1889 the opening of the Eiffel Tower was commemorated by the famous spoon having the design of the Eiffel Tower.
One can also get the second group of Absinthe spoons known as “les Grilles” or “Les Grillagees”. “Les cuilleres” are the third type which includes designs with a long handle and a cradle for holding sugar cubes.

“Les Cuilleres de Poilus” is considered as one of the most popular Absinthe spoons. A Poilu was a French soldier from the Great War and these Cuillere spoons were fashioned by soldiers at war using materials which were close at hand – shell casings, aluminum, tin and brass. These spoons were only made at the start of the war because Absinthe was banned in France in 1915. Soldiers designed these spoons according to their drinking cups. Today these beautiful and unique spoons are categorized as highly collectible antiques.

Absinthe was banned because of the alleged psychedelic and psychoactive effects of thujone, the chemical found in the herb wormwood which is a major ingredient in Absinthe. In the 1990s Absinthe was given right in most countries because it was known that Absinthe was not dangerous for anyone.

The Absinthe Ritual

There is a ritual to be followed by lovers of the Green Fairy (Absinthe). Following things are needed to make the perfect Absinthe
– Importance of an Absinthe spoon
– Buying an Absinthe Glass
– Absinthe
– Iced Water
Some people would also say that an Absinthe fountain, brouiller or carafe should be used for the water.
How to prepare the Absinthe
– Pour approximately 25-50ml of Absinthe into your glass.
– After resting Absinthe spoon on the glass place a cube of sugar on it.
– Pour the iced water slowly onto the sugar cube. The louche is visible from the bottom of the glass.
Louching or clouding is caused because of non mixing nature of the essential oils in water. The drink should be milky or cloudy after being finished.

Depending on taste the ratio of water and Absinthe should lie between 3:1 and 5:1.

Using Absinthe spoons and other Absinthiana makes the Absinthe ritual full of fun.

Guide To Use Absinthe

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

As Absinthe has become a popular drink and with the legalization of a few brands of it one can experience an Absinthe revival. Yet, some people don’t really know how to use Absinthe correctly or even what Absinthe is.

What is Absinthe

Absinthe is not a hallucinogen or a drug. It is a strong alcoholic beverage with an alcohol by volume of up to 75% and an anise flavor.

Legend has it that Absinthe was created by Dr Pierre Ordinaire in Couvet, Switzerland in the 18th century as an elixir for his patients. Henri-Louis Pernod was distilling Absinthe and selling it commercially by the turn of the 19th century. Wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium), fennel, hyssop, lemon balm, angelica, aniseed, star anise,  juniper, dittany, nutmeg and melissa were also used along with a wine alcohol base distilled with different types of natural herbs by Pernod.

In France Absinthe became more famous than wine. As the Absinthe bars became famous the “Ritual” or traditional method of using and preparing Absinthe was born.

Due to it’s assumed harmful effects Absinthe was banned in France in 1915. All over the world these claims have proven themselves wrong on careful examination. One cannot suffer with such effects due to intake of Absinthe. Absinthe was legalized in many countries in the 1990s.

How to Use Absinthe the Traditional Way

To prepare Absinthe in the traditional way is to use the “Ritual”.
The requirement is:-
– A large glass or Absinthe glass.
– Absinthe
– An Absinthe spoon– replica glasses and spoons can be purchased online at AbsintheKit.One can visit the site AbsintheKit.com to make his own Absinthe. Top-quality Absinthe essences can be used to make own Absinthe.
– A sugar cube is needed.
– Use a carafe of iced water.

One has to pour a shot of Absinthe into the glass.
The spoon should be kept motionless on the rim of the glass before putting the sugar cube on it.
Slowly drip, rather than pour, the iced water over the sugar to dissolve it.
One can see the Absinthe louche as the water mixes into the Absinthe. The essential oils in the Absinthe are insoluble in water which causes the mixture to louche.
A person can enjoy the taste of the Green Fairy after stirring his Absinthe.

There is no problem in drinking Absinthe. Absinthe is made out of a curious blend of herbs that are either naturally relaxing in nature or are stimulants. The drunkness experienced by this blend of herbs are away from other drinks. A few people describe it as a “clear headed” drunkenness.

The Czech or Bohemian Method

With this method, once you have poured the shot of Absinthe into the glass you dip the sugar cube into the alcohol and then set it alight on the spoon with a match. Once the sugar has caramelized and melted through the spoon and into the Absinthe, you add the iced water.

Drinking Absinthe becomes a little enjoyful with the Bohemian method. There can be chances of catching fire in the glass of Absinthe due to a waste of Absinthe! Be careful.

One can make his own or search online for cocktail recipes on how to use Absinthe besides using the Ritual method for Absinthe.

Getting Absinthe Information

August 19, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

It is not easy to believe on so many contradictory Absinthe informations.

Misleading Absinthe Information

One book “Absinthe The Cocaine of the 19th Century: A History of the Hallucinogenic Drug and its Effect on Artists and Writersin Europe and the United States” by Doris Lanier, compares Absinthe to drugs such as cocaine because it was said to be addictive, to give a sense of euphoria, have psychedelic effects and weaken the brain and other faculties.

At the end of the 19th century and early 20th century Absinthe became well known to the people. People used illegal drugs of today at that time for medicine, on prescription for coughs etc. Even in drinks. The well known drinks in bars were Absinthe, Vin Maraiani and Coca Cola. The Europeans used these drugs and drinks regularly.

Absinthe was well known with Bohemian artists and writers to help their creativity and with the prostitute of the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre.

Wormwood contains thujone which was thought to be psychoactive and alike THC in the drug cannabis. THC affects the central nervous system whereas thujone affects the GABA receptors in the brain. A person can have hallucinations and fantasies, euphoric feeling, relieve from pain and an aphrodisiac with the over dose of wormwood.

In the beginning of 1900s Absinthe was banned along with some drugs in many countries around the world. We now know that its ban was just part of the hysteria of the time. Drugs like heroin (the White Fairy), cannabis and cocaine were lumped with Absinthe and also lots of people and websites mention it as magic mushrooms, LSD, weed, cannabis and ecstasy.

Absinthe Information – What we now know

We know that medical studies on Absintheand wormwood in the past were not accurate and were “colored” by the prohibition movement of the time and the worry that Absinthe was a drug. Recent studies have shown that Absinthe, once it is distilled, only contains very small amounts of thujone – not enough to cause any harmful side effects or hallucinations, that is just a myth. Vintage pre ban Absinthe do not contained any thujone content. A person would die of alcohol poisoning long before suffering any side effects from thujone.

Absinthe can now be enjoyed in bars and in homes across the world as it is authorized in most of the countries.

However it may not make trip or get high, it is easy to get drunk on Absinthe because of it’s high proof. The alcohol content in it is double in comparison to spirits like vodka or whisky so care should be taken when drinking it. A person drinking Absinthe will experience intoxication different from other spirits or fermented beverages. It is said to be a “lucid” or “clear headed” type of drunkenness. The blend of herbs and the alcohol can explain this. These qualities are also enhanced by preparing cocktails containing Absinthe and the caffeine loaded drink!

Anyone can be confused by believing on some of the misleading Absinthe information. A person can have entertainment while making this herbal alcoholic drink. A person can also enjoy making his very own wormwood Absinthe at home by using real, top-quality Absinthe essences.A person can enjoy Absinthe in an economical way on AbsintheKit.com.
